JD Vance on Abortion - Republican Candidates Lying on Abortion - Reproductive Freedom for All

JD Vance

Running for: U.S. Vice President

Republican U.S. Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance in a map of the U.S. with Washington DC highlighted

During a podcast interview in January 2022, then-Senate candidate JD Vance said he “certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally,” described himself as “100 percent pro-life”, and was “sympathetic” to the view that a national ban was necessary to stop people from traveling across states to access an abortion.

During his time in Congress, Vance has scored a consistent 0% on Reproductive Freedom for All’s congressional record. Vance voted with Senate Republicans to block a bill supporting protecting and restoring abortion rights following the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and voted against efforts to protect the right to IVF.

Vance supported a “national minimum standard” for abortion restrictions, i.e. a national abortion ban, before he realized just how wildly out of step his view was with voters.

Now he’s lying to voters and saying he’s been “consistent” about thinking abortion rights should be decided at the state level—as if those same state-level bans aren’t responsible for irreparable harm done to people seeking medical care across the country.
