In 2022, failed gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake said that she was “pro-life 1000%” and celebrated the fall of Roe in a podcast interview stating, “nothing can wipe the smile off my face” after the Supreme Court’s ruling. She said that she was “thrilled” about the prospect of Arizona’s near-total ban on abortion from 1864 going into effect as a result of Roe v. Wade being overturned.

But after the Arizona Supreme Court granted her wish and ruled that the state must adhere to the draconian 1864 abortion ban, she lied to voters, saying, “I oppose today’s ruling.”

What changed? She realized a “total ban on abortion is out of line with where people in this state are” and that her extreme anti-abortion views would cost her as she runs for Senate in 2024.
