Mobilizing in the States - Reproductive Freedom for All - 2023 Annual Report

Mobilizing in the States

Day after day, our members show up and show out to fight for reproductive freedom.

Last year, they showed us exactly what they can accomplish as they fought in states across the country to defend and expand our most basic rights.

Arizona

Arizona Organizing Chapter Reproductive Freedom For All

In 2023, Reproductive Freedom for All Arizona worked with our allies to co-found Arizona for Abortion Access, a citizens’ initiative that would place a constitutional amendment to protect abortion access on the November 2024 ballot. As part of the coalition, we’re working to inform Arizonans about this initiative and what’s at stake, and collect signatures to qualify for the ballot in November.

We also activated members across the state to engage with their legislators during the 2023 session—including a series of lobby days at the state Capitol, with over 30 members gathering to meet with Governor Katie Hobbs. While the state has anti-abortion majorities in the legislature, we were still able to stop all anti-reproductive freedom bills that were passed from becoming law, thanks to Gov. Hobbs, who vetoed bills on personhood, as well as attacks on medication abortion and out-of-state travel for abortion care. We also supported bold executive orders to protect abortion access in the state, such as the creation of an advisory council on protecting reproductive freedom.

California

California Reproductive Freedom For All Chapter

In 2023, Reproductive Freedom for All California—a founding member of the California Future of Abortion Councilworked as part of the coalition to support a package of reproductive freedom bills in the state. In all, 14 of the bills were signed into law, including bills to improve “shield” protections for providers of abortion and gender-affirming care—regardless of where the patient is located—and to strengthen California’s safe haven and privacy protections for out-of-state patients.

Overall, 725 of our members volunteered at 83 events that we hosted or co-hosted in 2023 to educate members and build community. Our members made 6,658 calls to mobilize support for proactive policies that support reproductive freedom, and 65 members attended our lobby day events, meeting with 50 legislative offices to support our co-sponsored legislation.

Georgia

Georgia Reproductive Freedom For All Chapter

In a state with a hostile legislature, Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia mobilized our members in 2023 to successfully stave off attacks designed to eliminate reproductive freedom. We also took action in support of intersectional priorities and advocated alongside our allies against SB 88, Georgia’s version of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which ultimately did not pass.

Overall in 2023, our members hosted postcard parties, made calls, and sent texts during the legislative session; we also tabled at community events, signing up 1,300 new members at 10 events. Our Georgia team also continued to lead the charge to ensure we have the most up-to-date information and messaging to help our staff, members, and partners organize and mobilize. Alongside our partners in the state, we initiated research that shows an overwhelming majority of Georgians still want abortion care, including medication abortion, to be accessible and support strengthening laws to do so.

Michigan

Michigan Reproductive Freedom For All Chapter

On the heels of reproductive freedom victories in the 2022 elections, in spring 2023, Governor Gretchen Whitmer made history by signing into law bills to repeal the state’s 92-year-old total ban on abortion. And that November, the Reproductive Health Act (RHA)—a package of bills aimed at expanding access to reproductive freedom in the state—was signed into law. As part of Reproductive Freedom for All Michigan’s Day of Action in support of the RHA, 53 members joined us to meet with 22 state legislators.

Overall in 2023, 224 of our members attended 16 events that we hosted or co-hosted. Our members sent 51,354 texts and made 1,233 phone calls in support of key legislation, while also hosting community dialogues to educate and engage their friends and families about opportunities and threats to reproductive freedom.

Nevada

NV Organizing Chapter Repro for All

In 2023, we helped form the Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom Coalition—a group of organizations, led by Reproductive Freedom for All Nevada, Planned Parenthood Nevada, and ACLU of Nevada, to strive for bold advancements for reproductive freedom in the state. In spring 2023, we conducted polling demonstrating that there is wide-reaching support for a constitutional amendment that would fill gaps in abortion care in the state. And we continue to educate people about what’s at stake, serve as the bilingual coalition spokesperson, and gather signatures—and the measure has now qualified for the November 2024 ballot!

Overall, we hosted or co-hosted 12 events in Nevada to educate members and build community in 2023. Our members sent 134,953 texts and made 4,249 calls to mobilize other members across the state, and completed 104 volunteer shifts to help educate their communities about opportunities to expand access.
