Reproductive Freedom For All state chapters build grassroots and political power to engage and mobilize communities, lobby state lawmakers, and advocate for reproductive freedom.

In California, we are working to protect and expand abortion rights and ensure further reproductive freedom for everybody including access to abortion care, birth control, gender-affirming care, pregnancy and postpartum services, paid family leave, and protections from pregnancy discrimination and harmful restrictions on care.

We have the power to show other states what it looks like to have reproductive freedom—and also protect those who travel to California from out-of-state in order to access abortion care.

California’s Reproductive Freedom Laws at a Glance

Abortion Rights and Access

• Right to abortion is protected by the California constitution
• Allows abortion care up to viability, or to protect the life or health of the woman or pregnant person
• Private health insurance plans are required to cover abortion care without cost-sharing and there is also public coverage available
• Find out where to access abortion care in CA at abortion.ca.gov.

Contraception

• Right to choose or refuse contraception is protected by the California constitution
• Protects contraceptive equity regardless of insurance status, gender identity, or place of employment
• Requires coverage of over-the-counter birth control options and vasectomy services without cost-sharing
• Allows pharmacists to prescribe contraception, and requires plans to cover a 12-month supply

Abortion Clinics and Providers

• Provides protections from harassment and physical harm for anyone entering an abortion clinic
• Protects abortion providers from hostile investigations from other states
• Provides strong privacy protections for patients and providers
