The State of Abortion in Michigan
After decades of anti-abortion policy, Michigan has taken huge steps forward—but access is not equal for everyone, and anti-abortion extremists haven’t gone away.
WHAT WE’RE FOCUSED ON
- Protect Clinics and Patients from Harassment: We’re urging lawmakers to pass SB 154, which would create safety zones around reproductive health centers and protect patients and providers from harassment, intimidation, and violence by anti-abortion extremists.
- Restore Funding for Reproductive Health Providers: We’re fighting to restore state funding for Planned Parenthood of Michigan, which continues to face gaps in care due to federal Title X and Medicaid cuts imposed under the Trump administration.
- Implement the Reproductive Health Act (RHA): In 2023, we helped pass the Reproductive Health Act—a major legislative win that repealed dangerous TRAP laws (specifically to close abortion providers), eliminated criminal penalties for medication abortion, and removed bans on insurance coverage for abortion care. Now we’re working to ensure full implementation and public awareness across the state.
- Expand Access in Underserved Communities: We support continued investments in rural and low-income communities to ensure equitable access to abortion, contraception, prenatal care, and maternal health services, especially in areas where provider shortages and systemic barriers remain.
