Washington, DC Today, in the final stretch of the 2020 election, Higher Heights Political Fund and NARAL Pro-Choice America announced a new GOTV radio ad targeting women voters across Georgia and urging them to “fight for what matters.”  The ad aims to drive out the vote in the key battleground state.

The ad spotlights how Joe Biden and Kamala Harris fight for education, healthcare, and reproductive freedom, and mentions Georgia’s early voting deadline of October 30. The ad is aimed at mobilizing suburban women voters outside Atlanta, as well as voters in key areas outside of Atlanta such as Albany, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, and Savannah, and taps into the power of Black women voters across the state. Black women voters make up the backbone of the Democratic base and time and time again have proven critical to Democratic victories up and down ballots.

The speaker in the ad says: “And when we see injustice, we speak up and we fight for what matters. So do Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and all the strong Democrats on the ballot. They fight for education, health care, reproductive freedom and so much more. They’ve always had our backs. Now, let’s have theirs. Let’s VOTE.” You can listen to the full add here.

Statement from Kimberly Peeler-Allen, Co-Chair of Higher Heights Political Fund:

“Because of the power of Black women voters, Georgia is officially a toss up. At Higher Heights we know the change that can be made in our communities when Black women harness their political power at the voting booth. We are calling on them to leverage that power to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and all of the strong Democrats up and down the ballot. Black women in Georgia cannot afford another term of Donald Trump’s repressive agenda coupled with Congressional and state leadership that marginalizes and degrades them at every opportunity. Black women will be hurt most by the dangerous attacks on healthcare and reproductive freedom led by Trump and the Republicans. It’s time for us to fight for what matters most and that means electing candidates up and down ballot who champion the issues that matter to Black women and all women.”

Statement from Laura Simmons, NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia Director:

“Women in Georgia are a force to be reckoned with, and in these final weeks of this critical election, NARAL is working to ensure that they understand what’s at stake for the rights and freedoms we hold dear, including reproductive freedom. Trump and Republican politicians have worked relentlessly to undermine access to abortion care at every turn. They have made life harder, not easier, for Georgia’s women and families, and this has been felt most acutely by communities of color. Women across the state understand the devastation that would come from another four years under Trump, and we are helping to mobilize them to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”

Higher Heights and NARAL are working in Georgia to defeat Donald Trump and elect Joe Biden. Higher Heights is mobilizing Black women voters to elect candidates who will champion their values up and down ballots, and NARAL is also working to move persuadable suburban women voters to unseat Republican Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue and replace them with reproductive freedom advocates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. In addition, NARAL is working to flip key seats in Georgia’s House and Senate in the wake of Georgia’s state legislature passing H.B. 481, an extreme ban on abortion before many women even know they’re pregnant.

Georgia already faces alarming inequities in healthcare access, including the worst maternal mortality rate in the nation, which disproportionately impacts Black women. Over half of Georgia’s counties do not have an OB-GYN.

NARAL Pro-Choice America recently released new polling by Change Research showing that suburban women voters in Georgia strongly support reproductive freedom, oppose Georgia’s 2019 abortion ban, and do not trust politicians to make decisions about women’s health.

  • Overall, a vast majority (78%) of suburban women oppose making abortion illegal and turning back the clock to the days before Roe v. Wade.
  • Suburban women do not trust Georgia politicians to make the right decisions when it comes to women’s health. Overall, 61% say they do not trust them at all– including 75% of Independents, 76% of Black voters, and 72% of white voters under 35.

Higher Heights is the only national organization providing Black women with a political home exclusively dedicated to harnessing their power to expand Black women’s elected representation and voting participation, and advance progressive policies. Higher Heights is building the political power and leadership of Black women from the voting booth to elected office and creating the environment for Black women to run, win and lead.

For over 50 years, NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates and chapters have fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom—including access to abortion, contraception, and paid family leave—for every body. NARAL is powered by its more than 2.5 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 7 in 10 Americans who believe every person should have the freedom to make the best decision for themselves about if, when, and how to raise a family.
