California Continues its Reproductive Freedom Leadership in National Moment of Crisis
Three Senate Bills Move to Assembly; Ten Assembly Bills Move to Senate
CALIFORNIA – The California Future of Abortion Council (CA FAB Council) Steering Committee, comprised of ACCESS REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE, Black Women For Wellness Action Project, Essential Access Health, NARAL Pro-Choice California, National Health Law Program, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, and Training in Early Abortion for Comprehensive Healthcare (TEACH), released the following statement in response to the California Legislature passing the entire CA FAB Council supported bill package out of their ‘House of Origin.’ The package includes 13 bills that stem from the recommendations put forth by the CA FAB Council in its report issued in December.
“California leaders are meeting this moment of crisis and ensuring that California is going to continue to lead the way in the fight for Reproductive Freedom.”
“As extreme politicians in more and more states enact cruel, dangerous and stigmatizing bans on abortion, with Oklahoma being the latest example, more and more people are being forced to travel elsewhere in search of the essential health services they want and need. California has often served as a beacon of hope and has paved the way for protecting fundamental rights and expanding access to care.”
“Reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations across California are working hard as we anticipate the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to ensure people, regardless of their home state, will be able to access abortion services here in California. We can’t leave anything on the table. The CA FAB Council has put forward a robust and comprehensive package to make the promise of abortion access, a reality for all. Because as we know, just because a right exists does not mean access to that right is equitable.”
The bill package successfully moving through the California Legislature into the second legislative chamber is accompanied by a $100+ Million investment put forth by Governor Gavin Newsom in his revised budget proposal that would make several key investments in workforce, infrastructure, security, community-based organizations providing medically accurate information, and more.
