NARAL Celebrates First Anniversary of Introduction of the Trust Nevada Women Act in the State Senate
NEVADA — In celebration of the one-year anniversary of the introduction of the Trust Nevada Women Act in the State Senate, NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada Director Caroline Mello Roberson released the following statement:
“One year ago today, state Senator Yvanna Cancela introduced SB179 — the Trust Nevada Women Act (TNWA) — one of the country’s most significant pieces of legislation on reproductive freedom passed in 2019. The Trust Nevada Women Act marked a historic move by the state to protect and uphold the reproductive freedom of Nevadans. As we prepare to caucus on Saturday, this anniversary serves as a timely reminder that we must elect leaders who share our values.
Nevada has a long history of trusting the women of our state to make the best decisions for themselves and their families, and voters made that clear in 2018 by electing a Democratic governor and the first majority-female legislature in the nation. As a result, our newly-elected champions for reproductive freedom were able push through the TNWA, making Nevada one of just a few states to advance reproductive rights in a year that saw 31 states push extreme restrictions on abortion.
The TNWA was also fueled by the tireless work of NARAL’s members and allies on the ground, who remain dedicated to making sure everyone can determine their own destiny. We are proud to have led the fight to advocate for the 83% of Nevadans who think abortion should be safe, legal, and free from government interference. As the nation’s eyes turn to the Silver State this weekend, we look forward to once again turning out in support of reproductive freedom.”
