New York — Today, voters in New York’s 15th Congressional District elected NARAL-endorsed candidate Ritchie Torres to the U.S. House of Representatives. Torres will be the first openly LGBTQ+ Afro-Latino member of Congress. His victory over anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican candidate Patrick Delices marks a huge win for reproductive freedom.
In response to Torres’ victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:
“NARAL Pro-Choice America congratulates Ritchie Torres for his decisive win to represent New York’s 15th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s clear that voters in the Bronx understood that the stakes are higher than ever and refuse to allow politicians like Patrick Delices to trample on their fundamental rights. We are proud to have played a role in this race, and look forward to fighting alongside Ritchie Torres to protect and advance reproductive freedom.”
Ritchie Torres is the first openly gay elected official from the Bronx and the youngest member ever elected to New York’s City Council. NARAL endorsed Torres in a competitive primary where he successfully defeated anti-choice Ruben Diaz, Sr. New York’s 15th Congressional District is also home to some of the communities hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the 2020 election cycle, NARAL Pro-Choice America ran its largest-ever electoral program designed to reach, persuade, and mobilize key voters in target states across the country who are motivated by Trump and Republicans’ unyielding attacks on reproductive freedom.
