Colorado — In the wake of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, Senate Republicans including Sen. Cory Gardner are already delivering on their strategy to jam through another nomination and install another Trump ideologue to the Court, even as Americans are already casting their ballots in the November presidential election.
Just days before her death, Justice Ginsburg made her final wish clear: “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.” It’s clear that reproductive freedom is on the line like never before, and a Trump supermajority on the Court would be devastating for our rights and freedoms for decades to come.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:
“It’s clear that when it comes to our fundamental freedoms, we’ve reached an all-out state of emergency, especially after the devastating loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The Radical Right has spent decades in a coordinated effort to take over our courts with the explicit intention of halting progress, ending Roe, and furthering their agenda of power and control. Rather than honoring Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s legacy or upholding the values of a strong majority of Americans, politicians like Senator Gardner are trying to jam through a nominee determined to gut reproductive freedom. Make no mistake, we will fight like hell to make sure that politicians like Cory Gardner, who have vowed to rubber-stamp Trump and Mitch McConnell’s efforts to stack our courts with ideologues, are held to account.”
Just last week, Gardner earned an ‘A’ rating from extremist anti-choice organization Susan B. Anthony (SBA) List for his dangerous positions attacking reproductive freedom, reflecting how wildly out of touch Gardner is with the 77% of Americans who support the legal the right to abortion.
In addition to being home to a high-stakes U.S. Senate race, Coloradans will also vote on Proposition 115, an intentionally confusing abortion ban that would force a woman to carry a pregnancy to term with zero exceptions for health and individual circumstances. Coloradans have already rejected similar bans at the ballot box three times, and the anti-choice movement’s efforts to advance this abortion ban during the COVID-19 pandemic—a time when we should be prioritizing the health, safety, and wellbeing of women and families—shows there’s no low they won’t sink to in pursuit of their extreme ideological agenda.
NARAL Pro-Choice America is in the midst of our largest-ever electoral program designed to reach, persuade, and mobilize key voters, including Coloradans who are motivated by Senator Gardner’s betrayal of their values and Trump and Republicans’ unyielding attacks on reproductive freedom. Come November, NARAL and its 2.5 million members are ready to vote out Donald Trump, flip the Senate, and hold senators like Cory Gardner accountable.
