In light of today’s hearing on the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) in the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
“The Women’s Health Protection Act is an important step forward to safeguard reproductive freedom at a time when the right to access abortion faces unprecedented threats. With an anti-choice majority on the Supreme Court and state legislatures working in overdrive to pass bans and restrictions on abortion, it’s imperative that Congress take action to protect our fundamental freedoms. With Roe v. Wade in jeopardy and the Kavanaugh court poised to hear its first major abortion related case next month, this bill reflects the values of the vast majority of Americans who support Roe, oppose abortion bans, and who do not want politicians interfering in personal decisions about pregnancy.”
Today’s hearing on the Women’s Health Protection Act (H.R. 2975/S. 1645) comes at a time when reproductive freedom is under unprecedented attack. Across the country, we have seen a new wave of extreme bans on abortion, in addition to harmful restrictions passed by anti-choice politicians in an effort to undermine abortion access. WHPA would protect the federal right to access abortion and would block the onslaught of state bans and restrictions intended to impede or outright block access to abortion. It would provide a critical safeguard for reproductive freedom and women’s ability to make personal decisions about pregnancy, free from interference from politicians.
