Press Release
Washington, DC — Today, Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives announced their intention to consider the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) during the adoption of the House Rules Package, making affirming the right to abortion their first action of the 118th Congress. WHPA would protect the right to abortion throughout the United States at a time when extremist lawmakers in multiple states are enforcing total bans on abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“By bringing up the Women’s Health Protection Act as their first action of the 118th Congress, House Democrats sent a powerful message: Reproductive freedom cannot be up for negotiation, and they won’t back down from the fight for abortion rights. It’s not only a bold, unapologetic statement of their values—but a historic assertion that restoring the right to abortion in every state and expanding access must remain a top priority. As we face relentless attacks from anti-choice extremists, we’re grateful to our champions in the House for fighting for the 8 in 10 Americans who support the legal right to abortion. The Republican House majority has already put further eviscerating abortion access and disregarding the will of the majority at the top of their agenda, and we know that having champions willing to fight for our fundamental rights will make all the difference.”
