NARAL Pro-Choice America Condemns Anti-Abortion North Carolina Supermajority as They Override Gubernatorial Veto on Abortion Ban

Raleigh, NC — Today, the anti-abortion supermajority in the North Carolina State Legislature overrode Governor Roy Cooper’s veto on an extreme ban on abortion at 12 weeks of pregnancy (SB 20). Should this law go into effect, it would continue to decimate access to abortion care in the Southeast, where states throughout the region are currently enforcing extreme bans.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“This is dangerous. The anti-abortion supermajority in the North Carolina legislature just trampled over every chance they had to listen to the public—their constituents—all to enact a cruel ban on abortion. Governor Roy Cooper did the right thing by vetoing this legislation, and we are thankful for his actions. Now the work begins to give North Carolinians a legislature that will protect their freedoms. NARAL Pro-Choice America will continue to fight for the 8 in 10 Americans who support reproductive freedom and ensure this is the last chance anti-abortion extremists in the state can put people’s health and lives at risk.”
