Washington, DC — Today NARAL-endorsed candidate Senator Ed Markey won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. Sen. Markey will now advance to the November general election.
In response to Sen. Markey’s victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:
“Securing a pro-choice majority in the Senate is critical to protecting our fundamental freedoms and Senator Markey is the fighter we need to stand up for women and families in the face of relentless attacks from Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, and the Radical Right. Throughout his time in elected office, Senator Markey has proven his commitment to protecting abortion access and fighting for reproductive freedom. NARAL congratulates him on his primary victory and we look forward to working together to ensure every body is free to make their own personal decisions about pregnancy free from interference from politicians in Washington.”
Senator Ed Markey has represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate since 2013 where he has been a tireless fighter for reproductive freedom and a staunch defender of abortion rights. He consistently votes against the Trump administration’s anti-choice legislation and judicial nominees. During this legislative session, he voted against bills that would restrict access to abortion and interfere in personal decision-making about pregnancy. He has cosponsored key legislation such as the Women’s Health Protection Act, the Reproductive Rights are Human Rights Act, and the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Woman Act. Senator Markey was a powerful voice opposing Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court and has worked to defend Title X in the face of ongoing attacks from the Trump Administration. Senator Markey has a 100% score from NARAL Pro-Choice America.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates and chapters are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all. For more than 50 years, NARAL has worked to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
