Lansing, MI—Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of 32 candidates running for election to the Michigan State House and Senate. Michigan and roughly half of the states in the country are at risk of banning abortion now that the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“States are now the frontlines of the fight to protect access to abortion care, and few places are a better example of this than Michigan, where both legislative chambers are currently held by an anti-choice majority. We must seize on this opportunity to restore the rights the Supreme Court took from us by electing state legislators who represent us—the majority—the eight in 10 Americans who know that each of us should have the freedom to decide how and when we start or grow a family, free from political interference. NARAL and our nearly 85,000 members across the state will continue to mobilize voters to elect candidates who will fight to protect and advance our fundamental freedoms.”
State Senate Endorsements
State House Endorsements
These endorsements come as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up its work to elect candidates up and down the ballot in Michigan during this critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom. NARAL has previously endorsed Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel for reelection, as well as Hillary Scholten, Rep. Elissa Slotkin, Rep. Dan Kildee, Rep. Andy Levin, and Rep. Haley Stevens for the U.S. House.
Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe in its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—ending the constitutional right to abortion and opening the door for extremist state lawmakers to put total bans on abortion in place. This decision is already having a devastating impact throughout the country as 13 states have begun enforcing extreme and total bans on abortion.
NARAL, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and EMILY’s List announced a partnership in May to collectively spend a historic $150 million on the 2022 midterms to elect reproductive freedom champions up and down the ballot across the country. Read more about NARAL’s endorsed candidates here.
