Washington, DC — Today, on Giving Tuesday, NARAL Pro-Choice America released a new video, “The Future is Forward,” highlighting the ongoing fight for reproductive freedom, which has spanned generations of activists and continues to rage on as anti-choice politicians work to undo progress and restrict abortion access.
The video was created in partnership with Lyla Rose, a film director and NARAL member who is dedicated to fighting for reproductive freedom. From the cinematographer to the editor to the composer and more, the video was created by an all-women team. It features young activists passing a baton in a relay race that symbolizes the progression of time, and each runner represents a different era in the fight for reproductive freedom. The baton handoff represents the progress being made in the long fight for reproductive freedom, illustrated through changing modes of filmmaking, until we reach the contemporary moment. With a call to action to support NARAL, Lyla compels viewers to keep the momentum going.
“We must continue to carry forward the critical fight for reproductive freedom to ensure a better future for the next generation,” said Melissa Schwartz, NARAL Pro-Choice America Chief Development Officer. “On this Giving Tuesday, we honor the work of past generations, reflect on how far we have come, and celebrate how activists and supporters are stepping up to the challenges in front of us today. We are grateful for tireless activists over generations who have never wavered in the face of anti-choice forces trying to roll back our freedoms. At the same time, we know this fight is far from over, and NARAL and our 2.5 million members across the country will never stop fighting until every body has the freedom to make their own decisions about their lives, health, and futures.”
Roe v. Wade and access to abortion care are on the line with a conservative majority on the Supreme Court and as anti-choice politicians continue in their crusade to end abortion access. Trump and Republican-led state legislatures have worked in overdrive to roll back abortion access in recent years, but the reproductive rights, freedom, and justice movement have the will of the American people on our side. Americans overwhelmingly support reproductive freedom, with 77% supporting Roe v. Wade.
Here at NARAL, we have been fortifying rights and protections and expanding access where we can by locking the protections of Roe into law at the state level. We will continue to work to expand access to abortion and ensure everyone has the freedom to make the best decisions for themselves, as well as end racist and discriminatory bans on abortion coverage like the anti-choice Hyde Amendment, which disproportionately affects Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC).
NARAL looks forward to continuing our work to protect and expand reproductive freedom for every body, which is possible thanks in large part to the generosity of our supporters.
