Lindsey Graham and Jaime Harrison are both now officially on the ballot in South Carolina’s increasingly hotly contested U.S. Senate race. Graham won today’s Republican primary and will face off against Harrison in November, who did not have an opponent in the Democratic primary.
Today’s primary comes on the heels of new polling that shows Harrison and Graham in a dead heat, with both candidates currently tied at 42 percent. The poll also found that 56 percent of voters had an unfavorable view of Graham, while Harrison has gained an 18-point lead among Independent voters. Last week, Graham expressed his support for the use of federal forces to quell the growing national unrest following the murder of George Floyd.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue said:
“Senator Lindsey Graham long ago abandoned the illusion that he’s governing on behalf of his constituents, overtly choosing to put loyalty to a reckless, dangerous and selfish president above South Carolinians. Fortunately, South Carolina NARAL members and voters across the state will soon have an opportunity to cast their ballot for Jaime Harrison. Jaime is a champion for women and families, committed to reproductive freedom and to fight against oppression for the dignity of every body.
The country is gripped in the throes of a conversation about racial oppression and police brutality. Despite massive public support, Roe v. Wade is under existential threat. Jaime understands that the ability to raise children free from the specter of violence is critical when making decisions about if, when, and how to raise a family. His reasoned and ethical leadership is a welcome counterpoint to the extreme rhetoric and policies of the GOP. He will definitely be part of a sea change in 2020 to center policies that ensure everyone has the freedom to live without fear and determine their own destiny. South Carolina deserves much better than Lindsey Graham. NARAL is proud to support Jaime and our members look forward to making sure we send him to the Senate this November.”
