NARAL Pro-Choice America Responds to Vote on Senate Filibuster Rules

Washington, DC — Today, the United States Senate failed to reform the filibuster rules, which would have allowed the Senate to end debate with 51 votes rather than 60 and proceed to a vote on final passage of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“This devastating outcome is a blow to our democracy and our fundamental freedom to make our decisions about our families and lives. It is unmistakably clear that all of our most sacred rights and freedoms are in danger, thanks to the Republican Party’s determination to block progress and thwart the will of the American people.

 We are dismayed by the Republican-led effort to block legislation to protect the freedom to vote. These senators put themselves on the wrong side of history this evening and we will hold them accountable. We are grateful to the Democratic leadership in the Senate and the 48 senators who voted to change the outdated procedural barriers blocking critical legislation to protect our freedom to vote at a moment when our democratic institutions face unprecedented attacks.

 We will never stop fighting to ensure our voices are heard and our values are represented. Make no mistake: The freedom to vote underpins our fight for reproductive freedom and every other freedom we hold dear. Anti-choice lawmakers at the state and federal level will stop at nothing to dismantle our democracy and rip away our rights. We must fight back. Absolutely nothing should stand in the way of urgent action to ensure every voter has the freedom to participate in safe and accessible elections.”
