NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia Celebrates 16 Victories for Reproductive Freedom Champions in Georgia’s Democratic Primary
Washington — This week, 16 NARAL-endorsed candidates running up and down the ballot in Georgia won their Democratic primaries. Fifteen of these champions for reproductive freedom now advance to the November general election. Bee Nguyen, candidate for secretary of state, will face a runoff on June 21.
NARAL Pro-Choice America Southeast Campaigns Director Alicia Stallworth released the following statement in response to Georgia’s victories:
“The threat to Roe v. Wade and the legal right to abortion is galvanizing voters across the country, and Georgia’s primaries are further proof. Georgians took to the polls to vote for 16 champions for reproductive freedom to represent them up and down the ballot. Every one of these candidates will protect and advance our freedom to decide if, when, and how to start or grow our families. NARAL and our 54,000 members across Georgia congratulate these candidates on their advancements and look forward to continuing to mobilize voters to elect these champions in the June runoff and in November elections.”

Georgia’s primary victories come as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up its work to elect candidates up and down the ballot during a critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom through a historic $150 million investment in the 2022 midterms in coalition with Planned Parenthood Action Fund and EMILY’s List. Soon, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case about Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe v. Wade. A recent leak of the Court’s draft majority opinion confirmed that the Court is poised to overturn Roe and end the constitutional right to abortion as we know it.
If the landmark abortion rights decision is undone, 28 states—including Georgia—are expected to take action to prohibit abortion outright. If Roe is overturned and states move swiftly to ban abortion, pregnant people in Georgia are predicted to see a 1,091% increase in driving distance when seeking abortion care.
Listening to state leaders and recognizing the power and necessity of real on-the-ground investments, NARAL Pro-Choice America launched its Georgia chapter—NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia—in 2017 to help build the progressive momentum and infrastructure necessary to make Georgia a key battleground state. NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia spent years working alongside other in-state groups to lay the foundation to help flip Georgia blue, mobilizing tens of thousands of voters to turn out for reproductive freedom candidates.
