NARAL Responds to the Trump Campaign’s Ridiculous, Outrageous, and False Statement about NARAL’s New Ad Campaign

After NARAL announced a new ad campaign today to hold Donald Trump accountable for exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic in an effort to ban abortion, the Trump campaign responded in a statement to NPR this afternoon.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement responding to the Trump campaign:
“Donald Trump just blew an opportunity to stand with the vast majority of Americans and the medical community who know that accessing abortion care is essential in this moment. They doubled down in backing the extreme actions in these states, adding fuel to the fire of the public health care crisis already underway.
More than 30,000 people are dead and more than 16 million are unemployed in large part due to the total and complete incompetence of the Trump Administration and their failed response to this crisis. No wonder they want to distract the public with a ridiculous, outrageous, and false statement about NARAL and our millions of members. Trump and allies are still using this pandemic as cover to advance their agenda of banning all abortion, and to spread disinformation. They didn’t even bother to deny this on the record. Because they can’t.”
Governors and other officials in states across the country have attempted to used the pandemic as an excuse to try to ban abortion, using medical disinformation to push their unpopular agenda at the direct expense of people’s health and lives. Donald Trump is effectively endorsing these governors’ actions, both contributing to and condoning the spread of disinformation in order to deflect from anti-choice politicians’ efforts to ban abortion and punish women.
