Texas — Yesterday, NARAL-endorsed candidate Wendy Davis narrowly lost her bid for the U.S. House of Representatives in Texas’ 21st Congressional District.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement in response:
“Though we’re disappointed in today’s results, NARAL Pro-Choice America is so proud to have backed Wendy Davis in her bid for election to the U.S. House of Representatives in Texas’ 21st Congressional District. Wendy Davis has always recognized exactly what is at stake for women and families when it comes to reproductive freedom, and she vocally championed our fundamental rights over the course of this race. Make no mistake: Though this race may be over, NARAL will never stop fighting to defeat anti-choice, anti-freedom politicians like Chip Roy. We will be watching Roy, and will continue to hold him accountable for his out-of-touch agenda.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Executive Director Aimee Arrambide said:
“NARAL Pro-Choice Texas applauds Wendy Davis for championing reproductive freedom and standing strong against anti-choice Republican incumbent Chip Roy. While we are disappointed with the outcome of this election, NARAL and our members across Texas are committed to continuing the fight against Chip Roy’s relentless attempts to dismantle our reproductive freedom.”
In the 2020 election cycle, NARAL Pro-Choice America ran its largest-ever electoral program designed to reach, persuade, and mobilize key voters in target states across the country who are motivated by Trump and Republicans’ unyielding attacks on reproductive freedom.
Republican incumbent Rep. Chip Roy is an anti-choice, anti-freedom extremist who formerly worked for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and has consistently earned a 0% score from NARAL in the Congressional Record on Choice. Roy’s views are wildly out of step with the 7 in 10 Americans who support reproductive freedom.
Texas has some of the most severe restrictions on abortion in the United States, including forcing delays before a person can receive abortion care and subjecting patients to mandatory biased counseling. These restrictions disproportionately harm BIPOC, low-income, and rural communities, and are part of a coordinated effort by the Radical Right to maintain white patriarchal control at all costs.
