Reproductive Freedom for All Releases Statement Responding to State of the Union

Washington, DC This evening, President Joe Biden delivered his State of the Union address to a joint session for Congress, underscoring his administration’s ongoing commitment to restoring the federal right to abortion and advancing reproductive freedom. Congressional Democrats remain united behind the president, with Leader Hakeem Jeffries having invited Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju to attend the address as his guest.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“Tonight, President Biden reaffirmed that he has our back. The stakes this November could not be higher for reproductive freedom, abortion access, and our democracy itself. Every step of progress that we hope to make nationally depends on the reelection of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and delivering Democratic majorities in Congress.”

Since taking office in 2021, the Biden-Harris administration has:

  • Established the Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access;
  • Issued a Memorandum and an Executive Order directing agencies to improve access to reproductive health care, including abortion and contraception;
  • Committed to enforcing federal laws and rules to protect reproductive freedom;
  • Expanded access to reproductive health care for veterans and their families;
  • Confirmed fair-minded, qualified federal judges to protect and uphold our fundamental rights;
  • Issued DOJ memoranda clarifying peoples’ rights under federal law, including the right to travel and reiterating that the antiquated Comstock law does not prevent the movement of reproductive health care products and tools via mail;
  • Provided access to accurate information and legal resources (examples include HHS launching ReproductiveRights.gov and DOJ’s resource page);
  • Released a budget free of the discriminatory Hyde Amendment for the first time in decades and excluding the DC abortion ban.
