Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Larry Hogan’s Abortion Ad

Washington, DC Today, Republican Larry Hogan released an ad trying to again gloss over his anti-abortion record knowing how politically toxic it is with Maryland voters.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“A Republican who vetoed legislation expanding abortion access in his state won’t do anything other than follow his party line. Angela Alsobrooks is the only candidate in this race we can trust to protect and expand abortion rights and access. If Larry Hogan wins in November, he could cement a GOP majority that could not only move to ban abortion nationwide but could help appoint even more extremist judges to our nation’s courts. We can’t afford to let that happen, and that’s why we’re mobilizing our members to make sure it never does.”

Hogan has already publicly declared that he will fall in line with the Republican Party — a party that has worked relentlessly to end abortion access nationwide — should he win in November. His statement today is nothing more than a blatant attempt to run from his anti-abortion record.

  • As governor, Hogan vetoed a bill that would have expanded abortion access in Maryland.
  • Hogan has previously repeatedly refused to commit to supporting legislation to restore the federal right to abortion nationwide (because spoiler, he won’t).
  • Hogan has repeatedly refused to say whether he would support federal legislation to protect IVF in the wake of the Alabama Supreme Court decision threatening access to it.
  • Hogan calls former Vice President Mike Pence — who has championed his role in ending Roe v. Wade and called for a nationwide abortion ban — a “good friend.”
  • Hogan dismissed the need to protect abortion in Maryland’s state constitution, claiming abortion is just “an emotional issue for women”  and that there is “no threat to the protection of these rights.”
