Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Trump Becoming Official Republican Nominee for President
Washington, DC — Tonight, Donald Trump accepts his party’s nomination at the Republican National Convention to become the nominee for the 2024 election. A second Trump presidency would give Donald Trump another opportunity to undermine abortion access and reproductive freedom, including through Project 2025, an anti-abortion blueprint that Trump could launch on Day One of his administration.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“Our country is at a crossroads, and now more than ever, we can’t lose focus on what we know will happen if Donald Trump wins this election—he will ban abortion nationwide. Millions of Americans continue to live under the consequences of his administration, and he will not stop until we lose all our freedoms. The only way we can defeat Donald Trump and his radical agenda is to vote for the Biden-Harris ticket this November so we can lock in the federal right to abortion, expand access, and safeguard our democracy.”
Not only is Trump responsible for the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and ending the federal right to abortion, but he stacked his administration with extremists who used every tool at their disposal to attack abortion rights. Given the chance, Trump and his administration will implement the policies laid out in Project 2025 which would be the most extreme aggressive anti-abortion policy agenda in the history of our country. The plan includes language and policies that propagate the belief that life begins at conception. This so-called “personhood” language could ban not only abortion, but also some forms of birth control and assisted fertility treatments like IVF. It also wilfully misinterprets and misuses the antiquated Comstock Act to block access to both abortion pills and medical equipment used for abortion care. This would effectively ban abortion in all 50 states—with or without the support of Congress and the courts.
During his time in office, Trump:
- Stacked the federal judiciary with conservative ideologues and built the anti-abortion supermajority on the Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the federal right to abortion.
- Installed anti-abortion extremists in key leadership roles throughout his administration, including Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, former Health and Human Services Secretaries Tom Price and Alex Azar, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
- Put the harmful domestic gag rule in place. This anti-abortion policy decimated the Title X family planning network by forcing many health care providers out of the program who—in addition to other services—provided abortion care. The restriction also prohibited Title X providers from referring for abortion care.
- Reinstated and expanded the anti-abortion global gag rule. Though previous Republican presidents have applied the policy, the Trump administration’s version greatly expanded it to apply to organizations receiving any U.S. global health assistance.
- Voiced that people who seek abortion care should be subject to “some sort of punishment.”
