Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Trump’s Support For National Abortion Ban

Washington, DC Today, the New York Times reported that Donald Trump—who stacked the U.S. Supreme Court with the express purpose of ending Roe v. Wade—has privately confirmed his support for a national abortion ban. Polling shows that a majority of Trump’s own base who voted for him in 2020, and nearly three-quarters of GOP voters, feel the GOP has gone too far on abortion and politicians need to back down. Republicans’ anti-abortion platform and support for bans have been roundly rejected by voters across the political spectrum, leading to Democratic victories in the 2022 midterms and 2023 and 2024 special elections.

Reproductive Freedom For All President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“We all knew exactly who Donald Trump was—his actions proved it. He is a liar, and this confirms Trump can and will ban abortion nationwide, even without the support of Congress. He will try to hide his intent and spin his own words, but we won’t let him get away with it. The thing that will stop him is the 8 in 10 Americans who believe in the right to legal abortion. It’s up to us to return Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House so we can restore our right to abortion and expand access.”

A second Trump presidency would give Donald Trump another opportunity to do untold damage to our fundamental rights. Anti-abortion groups—who teamed up with Trump during his last administration to overturn Roe and decimate reproductive freedom—have partnered with other conservatives to create a lengthy agenda that he could begin launching on Day One of his administration. He is already responsible for ending Roe v. Wade, allowing the 21 that states have eliminated or restricted access because of abortion bans to devastate access to abortion care in our country. His work to end access to abortion, undermine reproductive freedom, and enable abortion extremists is undeniable:

  • Trump stacked the federal judiciary with conservative ideologues and built the anti-abortion supermajority on the Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the federal right to abortion.
  • Trump installed anti-abortion extremists in key leadership roles throughout his administration, including Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, former U.S.  Attorney General Jeff Sessions, former Health and Human Services Secretaries Tom Price and Alex Azar, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
  • Trump put the harmful domestic gag rule in place. This anti-abortion policy decimated the Title X family planning network by forcing many health care providers out of the program who—in addition to other services—provided abortion care. The restriction also prohibited Title X providers from referring for abortion care.
  • Trump didn’t just reinstate the anti-abortion global gag rule—he expanded it. Though previous Republican presidents have applied the policy, the Trump administration’s version greatly expanded it to apply to organizations receiving any U.S. global health assistance.

Reproductive Freedom for All announced an early endorsement of the Biden-Harris ticket last June alongside Planned Parenthood Votes and EMILYs List. As Republican politicians endanger the health and lives of millions of Americans with abortion bans, fight laws meant to ensure patients facing emergencies can access care, threaten people who miscarry with jail time, and declare their support for a nationwide ban, the only way to restore our rights and freedoms is by reelecting President Biden and Vice President Harris. This administration has done more to defend reproductive freedom and expand abortion access than any other in history—from establishing the Reproductive Rights Task Force to championing the restoration of the federal right to abortion to putting Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on the Supreme Court, and so much more.
