In response to tonight’s news that Donald Trump will speak at the anti-choice rally March for Life in Washington, D.C. on Friday, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s announcement today is an act of desperation, plain and simple. He takes refuge in his ability to whip up a radical anti-choice base, spewing falsehoods when he feels threatened. The majority of Americans support Roe v. Wade; a majority of Americans reject Trump’s extremism. Of course he’s turning to deception and disinformation about abortion to gin up a vocal and extreme minority as he faces the escalating reality that his presidency is crumbling around him.”
NARAL has chronicled Trump’s pattern of turning to disinformation and fear-mongering about abortion when he’s in hot water and embroiled in particularly explosive scandals. Read our memo here. Media Matters for America has also outlined the questions anti-choice politicians must answer about the implications of the draconian bans on abortion they support and how they’ll hurt women and families.
Trump will be the first president in U.S. history to participate in the March for Life in person. He has said that women deserve “some form of punishment” for accessing abortion, which stands in stark contrast to the views of the American public. There is no state in the country where banning abortion is popular, and 77% of Americans support Roe v. Wade.
