Washington, D.C. — As Hispanic Heritage Month begins, Reproductive Freedom for All is honoring the countless contributions of Latinas to the nation’s culture, economy, and democracy — while raising the alarm about unprecedented threats to their health, dignity, and freedom.

Reproductive Freedom for All Executive Director Yvonne Gutierrez released the following statement:

“This Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the Latina community means fighting for their right to control their lives, bodies, and futures. More than half of Latinas now live under abortion bans, and proposed Medicaid cuts will have catastrophic consequences for Latina families. While we celebrate Latino strength and success, we must also confront the current attacks on our freedoms. This month is not just a celebration — it’s a call to action.”

Latinas are at the heart of American life: they are business owners, essential workers, students, caregivers, and voters who have the power to shape the country’s future. But while their contributions are celebrated, politicians are pushing extremist policies, intending to continue to restrict their reproductive freedom.

  • Abortion bans: More than half of all Latinas now live in states where abortion is banned or severely restricted — states like Texas and Florida, home to millions of Latino families.
  • Medicaid cuts: One in three Latinas of reproductive age relies on Medicaid for health care. Proposed GOP cuts would strip insurance from millions, close clinics, and worsen maternal health outcomes.
  • Maternal health disparities: Latinas are 40% more likely than white women to experience severe maternal complications. Cutting safety nets will only deepen these inequities.
  • Strong support for freedom: Nearly 70% of Latinas believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases, and 60% of Latina voters are more likely to support candidates who protect reproductive rights.

Reproductive Freedom for All is participating in Hispanic Heritage Month events across the country. Earlier this year, the organization released new polling proving that Hispanic voters overwhelmingly reject GOP proposals to gut Medicaid, close Planned Parenthood clinics, and restrict reproductive rights. While awareness of these threats remains too low, Latino voters respond with strong opposition and are more motivated to hold politicians accountable.

As Latina voices and contributions are recognized during Hispanic Heritage Month, we acknowledge that our fight for their reproductive freedom is now more crucial than ever. Latinas are not only disproportionately impacted — they are leading the movement to protect care and expand access.

Reproductive Freedom for All has bilingual spokespeople available throughout Hispanic Heritage Month to speak to how abortion bans, Medicaid cuts, and other restrictions are impacting Latino families, and to share stories of resilience, advocacy, and community leadership.
