Defeat of anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican candidate Jim Marchant is a win for Nevadans and reproductive freedom
Nevada — On Tuesday, voters in Nevada’s 4th Congressional District reelected NARAL-endorsed incumbent Rep. Steven Horsford to the U.S. House of Representatives. His victory over anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican candidate Jim Marchant marks a huge win for reproductive freedom and protects a critical seat in the House.
In response to Horsford’s victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:
“We know that Rep. Steven Horsford will continue to be a fierce defender of our fundamental rights in the House of Representatives. We are proud to have endorsed Rep. Horsford, a proven champion for reproductive freedom, and congratulate him on winning this critical race.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada Director Caroline Mello Roberson said:
“NARAL congratulates Rep. Steven Horsford on his victory against anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican Jim Marchant. Throughout his campaign, Marchant proved he supports dismantling reproductive rights and restricting access to abortion care. We look forward to working with Rep. Horsford as he continues to fight on behalf of women and families everywhere.”
NARAL reached over 3 million voters in key states including Nevada through its historic 2020 electoral program. NARAL’s investment in Nevada included partnering with the Human Rights Campaign to host weekly Repro Freedom Power Hours to activate NARAL members in support of champions for reproductive freedom up and down the ballot.
In the final week before the election, NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada hosted three virtual Get Out the Vote rallies featuring U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV), U.S. Rep. Susie Lee, Nevada Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, and other prominent state leaders.
Last year Nevada was one of the few states to proactively safeguard reproductive freedom by passing the Trust Nevada Women Act, one of the country’s most significant pieces of legislation on reproductive freedom passed in 2019. The Trust Nevada Women Act marked a historic move by the state to protect and uphold the reproductive freedom of Nevadans in a year that saw 31 states push extreme restrictions on abortion. These types of restrictions disproportionately harm BIPOC, low-income, and rural communities, and are part of a coordinated effort by the Radical Right to maintain white patriarchal control at all costs.
