Wendy Davis, a champion for reproductive freedom who made national headlines when she filibustered an extreme anti-choice bill in the Texas state legislature in 2013, today won the Democratic primary in the 21st congressional district. From here, she moves to the general election to oust anti-choice Republican incumbent Rep. Chip Roy from office. In response to the election, Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America released the following statement:
“NARAL Pro-Choice America members congratulate Wendy Davis on her win in the Democratic primary race in Texas’ 21st congressional district. Donald Trump and anti-choice politicians like Rep. Chip Roy are waging an all-out assault on reproductive freedom in my home state of Texas and across the country. That’s why we need proven leaders like Wendy who won’t back down from the fight to protect our rights.”
“While Chip Roy wants nothing more than to insert himself into women’s personal decisions, Wendy has proven that she will always have the backs of Texas women and their families. This is the kind of leadership that Texans in the 21st congressional district need – and NARAL is proud to support Wendy Davis in her bid for Congress. We look forward to working with her to unseat anti-choice extremist Chip Roy.”
