Virginia — Yesterday, Virginia voters reelected NARAL-endorsed Representative Elaine Luria (D-VA) to represent Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her victory over anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican Scott Taylor marks a huge win for reproductive freedom and helps maintain a pro-choice majority in the House.
In response to Luria’s victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:
“We are proud to have endorsed Representative Luria, a proven champion for reproductive freedom, and congratulate her on winning this critical race. We know that Representative Luria will be a fierce fighter for reproductive freedom at a time when our fundamental rights are under unprecedented assault—and we need elected officials like her now more than ever.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Executive Director Tarina Keene said:
“NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia wholeheartedly congratulates Representative Luria on her re-election to represent Virginia’s 2nd district. Her leadership on reproductive freedom during her time in Congress has furthered our efforts to protect and expand reproductive healthcare access and rights. We look forward to continuing our work ahead with Representative Luria to ensure Virginia is a safe haven for abortion access.”
Rep. Elaine Luria was first elected to the House in 2018 and has earned a 100% voting record from NARAL’s Congressional Record on Choice. She represents the values of the 77% of Americans and 79% of Virginians who support reproductive freedom. Earlier this year—after NARAL Virginia helped secure a pro-choice majority in the Virginia General Assembly in 2019—NARAL Virginia led the charge for the Reproductive Health Protection Act (RHPA). The General Assembly passed the bill and the governor signed it, making it the first proactive abortion rights law ever to pass in the Commonwealth and the south. With reproductive freedom under unprecedented attack, this bill took a critical step to expand access to medically-accurate reproductive healthcare by repealing restrictions on abortion care that only hurt women and families. These types of barriers to care disproportionately harm BIPOC, low-income, and rural communities.
In the 2020 election cycle, NARAL Pro-Choice America ran its largest-ever electoral program designed to reach, persuade, and mobilize key voters in target states across the country who are motivated by Trump and Republicans’ unyielding attacks on reproductive freedom.
