Nation’s leading reproductive freedom advocacy group endorses three U.S. House candidates in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Texas
Washington, DC—Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced three critical endorsements for the U.S. House of Representatives: Kentucky State Senator Morgan McGarvey for Kentucky’s 3rd Congressional District, Texas State Representative Jasmine Crockett for Texas’ 30th Congressional District, and Harrisburg City Councilmember Shamaine Daniels for Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Republicans want a nationwide ban on abortion, and the best way to stop them is to elect candidates who will fight to protect and advance our freedom to decide if, when, and how to start or grow a family. We are in the fight of our lives, and we need leaders ready to be bold and unapologetic in their beliefs. The majority of Americans—8 in 10—support the right to legal abortion. We must have a Congress that reflected that.”
These NARAL-endorsed candidates bring a wealth of experience and strong commitments to protect and advance reproductive freedom in Congress. Kentucky State Sen. Morgan McGarvey has represented Kentucky’s 19th Senate District since 2013, where he has consistently voted to expand abortion access for all and opposed a barrage of dangerous bills introduced by anti-choice extremists. Texas State Representative Jasmine Crockett—the youngest Black member of the State House—has represented Texas’ 100th House District since 2021. She has consistently voted to protect reproductive freedom and has committed to protecting and expanding abortion access and ending the Hyde Amendment in Congress. Shamaine Daniels, who most recently served on the Harrisburg City Council, has committed to strengthening and expanding healthcare access, including access to abortion.
Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This cruel decision opened the door for extremist state lawmakers to enforce bans on abortion. Roughly half of the states in the country are at risk of banning abortion, and so far, 13 states have bans in place—including Kentucky and Texas. The people hurt most by these bans and restrictions are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.
These endorsements come as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up its work to elect candidates up and down the ballot during a critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom. NARAL, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and EMILY’s List announced a partnership in May to collectively spend a historic $150 million on the 2022 midterms to elect reproductive freedom champions up and down the ballot across the country.
