Reproductive Freedom for All Applauds Arizona House Democrats as Bill to Repeal Abortion Ban Advances
The repeal effort passes as Arizona House Republicans Introduce Abortion Ban Ballot Referrals
Phoenix, AZ — Today, a bill introduced by Democrats in the Arizona House of Representatives to repeal the state’s total abortion ban advanced. At the same time, Arizona House Republicans moved to introduce a set of bills meant to put anti-abortion initiatives on the ballot this November with the goal of confusing voters and blocking efforts to enshrine abortion rights into the state constitution. This news comes after Republicans in the state House twice refused to advance the measure to stop the dangerous 1864 ban from going into effect. Efforts to repeal the ban are being led by state Democrats after the Arizona Supreme Court upheld it earlier this month, paving the way for it to go into effect and block access to abortion care statewide.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:“
Today, Arizona Democrats rallied to get us one step closer to repealing one of the most dangerous and extreme abortion bans in the country while anti-abortion Republicans have introduced bills that will put abortion bans on the ballot. We need to call this what it is: an attempt at voter suppression. They’re so scared of Arizona voters that they have to lie and rig the system to ensure they get their way. But voters are smart, and they’re not buying what the GOP is selling. We will keep fighting to stop this ban before it takes effect, and we will keep fighting for the right of all Arizonans to make their own decisions about pregnancy and abortion. ”
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Arizona Campaigns Athena Salman released the following statement:
“Advancing repeal efforts is a victory for House Democrats that gets us one step closer to ending a dangerous ban before it can begin waging untold damage on our communities. But it’s disgraceful to see the actions of the Arizona GOP. By introducing these anti-abortion ballot referrals, they are saying loud and clear that they won’t back down from their efforts to keep abortion banned in our state. They know that Arizonans want abortion to be legal and accessible, so they’re trying to confuse them with another ballot measure in order to keep one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country on the books. This is not over, and we will continue to fight back to make sure abortion rights are protected and this dangerous ban is repealed.”
