Reproductive Freedom for All Applauds Governor Hobbs for Signing a Repeal of Arizona’s 1864 Total Abortion Ban

Washington, DC  Today, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs signed a bill that would repeal Arizona’s 1864 total abortion ban. This comes after Arizona State Democrats successfully passed the repeal in the state legislature less than a month after the Arizona Supreme Court—a court stacked by anti-abortion extremists—upheld the ban. The repeal will become effective 90 days after the Legislature closes business for the Regular Session.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“We are so proud of Governor Hobbs, and our reproductive freedom champions in the legislature for fighting hard and fast to repeal this archaic and cruel abortion ban. This is what happens when we elect reproductive freedom champions up and down the ballot; they protect our fundamental rights and freedoms. Now, we will work tirelessly to elect more leaders who will fight back against Donald Trump and his MAGA extremists and their backward agenda.”

Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Arizona Campaigns Athena Salman released the following statement:

“This is a historic day in Arizona. We are grateful to Governor Hobbs and our champions in the state legislature. The urgency with which the legislature sent this repeal to the Governor’s desk reflects their intent to prevent this ban from taking effect. Today is a huge victory for reproductive freedom in Arizona but our work is not done. Our resolve to flip the Arizona legislature and secure the constitutional right to abortion through the Arizona Abortion Access citizen initiative is greater than ever. I look forward to mobilizing our 75,000 members to continue fighting back these anti-abortion extremists and defeat them this November.”
