Reproductive Freedom for All Applauds Senate Democrats’ Resolution Reaffirming the Importance of Emergency Abortion Care
Washington, DC — Today, Senator Murray, along with Senators Rosen, Baldwin, and Wyden, introduced a resolution reaffirming the importance of emergency abortion care. This action comes in the wake of news out of Georgia of the first two documented deaths in the country related to abortion bans. The Supreme Court had an opportunity this past term to affirm that the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act’s (EMTALA) long-standing requirement for hospitals to provide emergency medical care has always included abortion care, but they instead punted the issue back down to lower courts—underscoring the jeopardy this essential care is in. A companion resolution was introduced in the House last week by Representatives Sykes and Sherrill.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“The deaths of Amber Nicole Thurman and Candi Miller because of Georgia’s abortion bans have reaffirmed exactly how essential access to abortion — including emergency care — is to our families and communities. When people are blocked from accessing reproductive health care, there are deadly consequences. We extend our gratitude to Senators Murray, Rosen, Baldwin, and Wyden for understanding that reproductive freedom is a life-or-death issue and acting to shine a light on the stakes of this crisis.”
