Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns Dangerous and Non-Scientific Review of Mifepristone
Washington, DC — Last week, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Martin Makary confirmed in a letter to anti-abortion state attorneys general that the FDA is conducting a sweeping “review” of mifepristone, including the medication’s Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS). This opens the door to unnecessary, burdensome restrictions that could block access to the medication nationwide, even in states where abortion is legal.
Mini Timmaraju, President and CEO of Reproductive Freedom for All, released the following statement:
“Let’s be clear: this is not about safety—this is the first step in banning abortion nationwide, even in states where it is currently protected. Donald Trump, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Martin Makary are hijacking our government agencies to push a backdoor abortion ban. They are lying about their agenda, and this is proof. Mifepristone is safe, effective, and essential. This is political interference designed to rip away our freedoms.”
Mifepristone, approved by the FDA in 2000, is used in more than half of all abortions in the U.S. and is an essential medication for miscarriage care. Leading medical organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, have repeatedly affirmed its safety and emphasized that reimposing unnecessary limits on access to the medication will further jeopardize public health and worsen maternal health outcomes.
