Reproductive Freedom for All Endorses Susan Crawford for Wisconsin State Supreme Court
Washington, DC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All announced its endorsement of Judge Susan Crawford for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Crawford is a dedicated and experienced jurist who has spent her career defending reproductive freedom and protecting the rights of all Wisconsinites. With the balance of the court at stake, this election will have a direct impact on the future of abortion access and reproductive rights in Wisconsin. Reproductive Freedom for All previously mobilized its members in 2023 in support of Justice Janet Protasiewicz, who won a seat on the state court and flipped its anti-abortion majority to a reproductive freedom majority.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Wisconsin’s next state Supreme Court justice may be a make-or-break vote to decide whether or not an abortion ban will cut off access to care. Now that Trump has allowed states to ban abortion, state courts are on the front lines of our fight for reproductive freedom more than ever. We need Judge Crawford who recognizes that abortion is a fundamental right, and we are proud to endorse her in this race.”
Judge Crawford’s opponent, Judge Brad Schimel, has a long record of anti-abortion extremism. As the state’s attorney general, Schimel filed an amicus brief supporting targeted restrictions on abortion providers (TRAP laws) and said that he believes “life begins at conception”)—language that, if inserted into law, would ban abortion, some forms of birth control, and assisted fertility treatments like IVF. He has voiced his support for an abortion ban from 1849 that was automatically put into place when Roe v. Wade was overturned and said, “There is not a constitutional right to abortion in our State Constitution. That will be a sham if they find that.” Recently, anti-abortion leaders have thrown their support behind Schimel, and Pro-Life Wisconsin told its supporters that the “easiest road” to enacting a total abortion ban in Wisconsin “will be to elect Brad Schimel to the state supreme court.
