Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia Responds to State Supreme Court Reinstating Georgia’s Abortion Ban
Atlanta, GA — Today, the Georgia Supreme Court halted a ruling striking down the state’s abortion ban while it considers the state’s appeal. On September 30th, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney found that the state unconstitutionally prohibited abortions beyond six weeks often before women realize they’re pregnant. Just weeks ago, ProPublica reported on the devastating and preventable deaths of Amber Nicole Thurman and Candi Miller, two women who lost their lives because of Georgia’s deadly six-week ban.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Reinstating Georgia’s extreme abortion ban will only cause more death and devastation. This is not unexpected from an extremist court that has enabled Gov. Kemp and Georgia Republicans. The deaths of Amber Nicole Thurman and Candi Miller will not be forgotten. Restoring federal protections for abortion nationwide to eliminate these bans is the only solution to this crisis. We must elect Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz to get this done and restore our freedoms.”
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Georgia Campaigns, Alicia Stallworth released the following statement:
“The devastation these deadly abortion bans have caused in our communities can not be put into words. Today’s decision from an anti-abortion extremist court underscores the many flaws in our system. Not only do these abortion bans strip away our fundamental rights, but they also exacerbate the already catastrophic maternal mortality rates—particularly among Black and brown women. This November, Georgians will look to reproductive freedom leaders and proven champions, Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov Walz to protect and restore our freedoms.”
