Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Outcome of Georgia State Senate Race

Atlanta, GA  —  Today, Debra Shigley lost her bid in the special election runoff for Georgia State Senate District 21. In August’s election, Shigley got 40% of the seven-way vote, forcing a traditionally red district into a competitive runoff. Her campaign was monumental in building new infrastructure that will strengthen Democrats heading into 2026.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Debra has been a tireless advocate for her community, and a powerful voice for protecting Georgians’ freedoms. Regardless of the outcome, Georgia voters sent a message to anti-abortion extremists across the country, and it is tremendous that, in a historically red district, a Democrat made this a competitive election. Debra’s commitment to families, Black women, and reproductive freedom, is unwavering, and so is ours. Her campaign built momentum that we will carry forward as we continue to fight alongside Debra and our allies in Georgia.”

Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Georgia Campaigns Alicia Stallworth released the following statement:

“Debra inspired communities across Georgia, and our members showed up in force to support her. This campaign strengthened our movement here, and we’ll keep building on that energy in the fights ahead.”
