Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Senate Republicans’ Sham Hearing Recycling Disinformation About Medication Abortion
Washington, DC — Today, the GOP-led Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) held a sham hearing to recycle lies and debunked claims about mifepristone—a safe and effective medication that has been FDA-approved for more than 25 years and is used in the majority of abortion care in the U.S. Today’s hearing was the committee’s first of 2026, making clear that Republicans are prioritizing their unpopular anti-abortion agenda over the health and wellbeing of their constituents.
Senate Republicans handpicked longtime anti-abortion activists, Louisiana Attorney General Elizabeth Murrill and Dr. Monique Wubbenhorst, to parrot the same disinformation that has been repeatedly rejected by medical experts and more than 100 peer-reviewed studies. Their testimony ignored overwhelming evidence, including a new study published this week in the medical journal JAMA, which examined more than 5,000 pages of FDA documents over 12 years and concluded that FDA leadership consistently followed evidenced-based recommendations from the agency’s scientists when making key decisions about mifepristone.
The hearing followed a familiar playbook: undermine trust in the FDA and public health institutions to justify banning abortion nationwide.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Republicans can’t change the facts, so they resort to lies—and we’re grateful to Senate Democrats for showing up in full force to call them out at today’s bogus hearing. Anti-abortion politicians don’t want to protect women, they want to control them, and today they pushed more disinformation about a safe and effective medication to advance their ultimate goal of banning abortion nationwide.”
Anticipating that Republicans would rely on junk science and recycled falsehoods, Reproductive Freedom for All shared a memo outlining the facts about mifepristone ahead of today’s hearing.
