Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Speaker Johnson’s Efforts to Ban IVF for Military Members
Washington, DC — Today, Julianne McShane with MS NOW reported that House Speaker Mike Johnson has been quietly working to remove in vitro fertilization (IVF) coverage from the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for active duty military members.
According to the reporting, Johnson wants to remove the NDAA provision that would expand access to IVF for all servicemembers. Currently, servicemembers’ insurance only covers fertility services for military members whose infertility was caused by a serious or severe illness or injury while on active duty. Senator Tammy Duckworth highlighted the sacrifice servicemembers are already making for our country, calling out Speaker Johnson for “demand[ing] that they sacrifice their dreams of having a family.”
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Government Relations Amy Williams Navarro released the following statement:
“Attacking active servicemembers’ access to IVF and fertility treatments is a new and cowardly low, even for Speaker Johnson. It’s a cruel irony that Johnson, who has always publicly claimed to support and protect servicemembers, is now working behind the scenes to take IVF coverage away from the people who bravely serve our country. Once again, Donald Trump – the self-proclaimed ‘father of IVF’ – and his MAGA cronies like Mike Johnson are doing what they do best: lying and deceiving the American people while trying to strip them of reproductive health care.”
This news comes amid the Trump Administration’s repeated attacks on veterans’ health care.
