Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Speaker Mike Johnson Finally Deciding to Swear Adelita Grijalva into Congress

Phoenix, AZ — Today, Speaker Mike Johnson finally swore Adelita Grijalva into Congress, seven weeks after she was rightfully elected in September.

Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Arizona Campaigns Athena Salman released the following statement:

“After seven long weeks since Adelita Grijalva won her special election, she is finally getting sworn in. It is outrageous that Speaker Johnson and GOP leaders took this long, leaving the people of Arizona’s 7th District without representation through a government shutdown when people needed to be able to contact their representatives.

It’s equally shameful that not a single Republican Congressman from Arizona, including Rep. Juan Ciscomani from the neighboring Tucson district, spoke out against this blatant abuse of power, choosing partisanship and obstruction over the interests of over 800,000 Arizonans. They did this because they knew Adelita would hold them accountable for gutting health care for hardworking families and defunding Planned Parenthood. We look forward to working with Congresswoman Grijalva as we hold the line against this administration’s constant attacks on our rights and freedoms.”

When Grijalva won the special election for Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, she became the first Latina to represent Arizona in Congress. Reproductive Freedom for All Arizona members proudly worked to mobilize voters to help secure Grijalva’s victory.
