Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Trump’s Nomination of Martin Makary for FDA Commissioner
Washington, DC — Today, President-elect Donald Trump announced he will nominate Martin Makary as the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Makary is a Fox News contributor, who has pushed anti-abortion disinformation on air. The FDA plays a critical role in reproductive health care by regulating access to safe and effective medications, including contraception and medication abortion. Exploiting the FDA is one of the avenues Trump could use to effectively ban medication abortion – the most common method of abortion care – nationwide without going through Congress. Project 2025 outlines plans to have the FDA reverse its approval or severely restrict the availability of medications used in abortion care and miscarriage management. The FDA can also influence the availability and affordability of contraceptives, including the first over-the-counter birth control pill that was recently approved.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Marty Makary is a known anti-abortion extremist who will push the Project 2025 agenda. He could weaponize the FDA to effectively ban medication abortion, restrict contraception, and weaponize the FDA against reproductive freedom. We’ll hold this administration accountable for any attempt to use the FDA to trample on our freedoms.”
