Reproductive Freedom Is On The Ballot in North Carolina Gubernatorial Race: Bill Graham Must Tell the Truth About His Support for Abortion Bans

Washington, DC — This week, from Ohio to Kentucky to Virginia, voters across the country rejected anti-abortion extremism and protected their fundamental rights and freedoms at the ballot box. In crucial races across the country, voters made clear that they want nothing to do with anti-abortion politicians and their dangerous policies—ushering in a wave of victories for reproductive freedom. Less than one year from now, reproductive freedom will be on the ballot again in North Carolina, where Attorney General Josh Stein is running for governor. Knowing that the vast majority of voters support reproductive freedom, voters deserve to know the truth about Republican Bill Graham’s support for extremist abortion bans and attacks on our fundamental rights.

Reproductive Freedom for All Vice President of Political and Government Relations Ryan Stitzlein released the following statement:

“Voters across the country, even in deep-red states, continue to flock to the polls to protect abortion access and reject far-right extremists who want to control personal decisions about their lives and bodies. Ahead of the critical governor’s race in North Carolina, voters deserve to know the truth about Bill Graham’s support for extremist abortion bans.”

Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Attorney General Josh Stein last week as its first gubernatorial endorsement of the 2024 election cycle.

Additional background on Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein:

  • Attorney General Stein has been outspoken in supporting access to abortion and joined an amicus brief to defend the legality of medication abortion.

  • He has opposed mandates that require doctors to have admitting privileges at hospitals, which are designed to create obstacles for people seeking abortion care.

  • He has sued to defend public health providers that offer abortion care, like Planned Parenthood, from attempts to cut off their access to public health grants.

  • He took action against the Trump administration when it attempted to block access to abortion care through the Title X gag rule and when it attempted to roll back abortion discrimination rules for protected classes.

  • During his time in the North Carolina state Senate, Stein voted against various bills to institute mandatory delays in care and undergo biased counseling before receiving care.

  • He opposed legislation to limit abortion coverage in health plans and opposed cutting off state funding for family planning programs by certain providers.
