Senate Republicans Double Down on Trump’s Abortion Ban for Veterans and Their Families

Washington, DC — Today, Senate Republicans voted to uphold the Trump administration’s abortion ban for veterans and their families. The Trump administration’s Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) implemented the ban in December, prohibiting abortion counseling for VA beneficiaries and denying abortion care to veterans and their family members who rely on VA for health care. The rule rescinds a critical Biden-era rule that allowed veterans and eligible family members and caretakers to access abortion care through the VA in cases of rape, incest, and endangerment of the pregnant person. On December 31, 2025, VA formally announced this rescission in a final rule.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Our veterans put their lives and health on the line to protect our freedoms—and in Trump’s America, now they come home to a government that strips away their own. Senate Republicans just voted against their ability to make decisions about their bodies and their futures. Veterans and all people deserve the full spectrum of health care they need to build the lives they want. Congress must pass legislation to reverse this rule and restore that access for every veteran and family member who depends on VA for care.”
