Trump Endorses Anti-Choice, Anti-Science Candidate in CA-25 Special Election
This week Donald Trump decided to weigh in on the May 12 special election in California’s 25th Congressional District, endorsing anti-choice Republican candidate Mike Garcia.
Trump’s tweet supporting Garcia comes on the heels of the Los Angeles Times endorsing NARAL-backed Democratic candidate and reproductive freedom champion Christy Smith.
Voters in the 25th District will decide between Smith — who has garnered praise for her leadership in the State Assembly amid the pandemic — and a candidate being boosted by Trump, whose botched pandemic response contributed to the U.S. having by far the highest number of cases in the world.
As the LA Times noted in their resounding endorsement of Smith, “there’s no question which candidate is better prepared to step into the debate and help shape smart policy” as the country works to recover from the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.
The pandemic has exposed the blatant hypocrisy of so-called “pro-life” politicians like Trump and Garcia, who prioritize their own personal beliefs and ideology over science and medical expertise. In recent weeks Trump and his fellow anti-choice Republicans have exploited the pandemic to try and undermine reproductive freedom, using medical disinformation to push an unpopular agenda at the direct expense of people’s health and lives.
Unlike Trump and Garcia, Christy Smith has dedicated her life to championing issues critical to women and families, and has proven she will be a tireless advocate for the vast majority of Americans who believe women should be able to make their own decisions about pregnancy.
