Why Abortion Still Moves Voters: Pollster Molly Murphy on My Body. My Pod. Episode 4

My Body. My Pod. with Mini Timmaraju >> Episode 4

Abortion helped Democrats sweep the 2025 elections—we’re unpacking what the data tells us about how to win in 2026 and beyond.

Watch & Listen

Mini Timmaraju sits down with pollster and campaign strategist Molly Murphy, President of Impact Research, to dig into exclusive new data showing why abortion messaging worked, delivering sweeping wins nationwide.

In California, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Jersey, voters heard about abortion—and it mattered, especially when campaigns clearly defined the threat their opponents posed to reproductive freedom.

Together, Mini and Molly map the 2026 playbook: define the threat, bring receipts, and connect abortion to everyday life.

🔎 A Closer Look: Exclusive 2025 Polling Data on Abortion

“We won the voters who heard about abortion,” says Murphy. “People who heard about abortion voted for Democrats by enormous margins.”

Here’s some toplines from the 2025 election polling:

Voters heard about abortion—and it mattered.

In Virginia, 73% of voters heard about abortion, and 69% were worried that Winsome-Sears would try to ban it if elected.

Those voters broke hard for Democrats, delivering a historic reproductive freedom trifecta in statewide races.

Define the threat—it works better than just declaring values.

“If we don’t tell them there’s a threat to abortion, they are going to assume there is no threat,” says Murphy of the importance of educating voters on anti-abortion candidates.

Key take away: Don’t just say you’ll protect and expand abortion; people already assume you will. Tell voters what’s at risk first.

Make it specific.

Use receipts (votes, quotes, endorsements) of how anti-abortion opponents threaten rights.

“Restrictions” can sound reasonable, but “bans” cut through.

An anti-abortion stance signals broader values.

When a candidate is anti-abortion, it's shorthand for their views on democracy, the courts, and bending to Trump’s will.

In New Jersey, Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill’s won by huge margins after her campaign pointed to her opponent’s record of voting against Planned Parenthood.

Don’t silo. Abortion + affordability messaging wins.

Voters care about more than one thing.

The winning combo? “They’ll take your rights away and ignore your bills. We protect your freedoms and handle costs.”

Stories persuade.

Real people’s stories create urgency and attention—they break through where podium clips and talking points don’t.

🔑 Key Take Aways: Abortion Messaging for 2026 Elections

  1. Abortion remains a disqualifier for anti-abortion candidates.
  2. Name the threat, show receipts, and tie it to real-world consequences.
  3. Pair abortion with affordability; voters can care about both.
  4. Use storytellers to build urgency and attention.
