Activism 101 Explainers
One of the most effective ways to help people understand reproductive freedom is one-on-one conversation. Talking about abortion and why it matters to you can help destigmatize abortion care, inform others, and forge new connections with those you care about.
We know that these conversations can be intimidating, so here are a few common questions and helpful responses:
“Why do you support abortion?”
I believe we should all be free to make decisions about our own bodies, lives, and futures—and 8 in 10 Americans agree.
Politicians aren’t qualified to weigh in on our personal medical decisions, and they shouldn’t be able to restrict people from accessing care.
“You can’t support abortion and be a person of faith.”
Supporting abortion and being a person of faith are not mutually exclusive! I support abortion because of my faith, not in spite of it, because my faith is rooted in empathy and compassion. That means not judging others for their decisions and letting them shape their own future.
“Aren’t there more important issues to worry about?”
There are so many important issues, and abortion is one of them. As we’ve seen in recent elections, abortion is an extremely important issue for voters that wins when it’s on the ballot. Reproductive freedom doesn’t exist inside a vacuum—it’s inherently linked to and affected by other really important issues like voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and racial justice.
“I saw something really bad about abortion online, is that true?”
Anti-abortion extremists know they don’t have widespread support on their side—so they lie. If you see something about abortion online that seems confusing or scary—especially on social media—you should fact-check it with a credible source (the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is a great go-to).
