Washington, D.C. — Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America released a new nationwide survey conducted by Change Research from April 28-May 2 that found that an overwhelming majority of voters reject the argument that banning abortion at 15 weeks is a “compromise” on abortion rights. Instead, they believe decisions about abortion should be between patients and doctors—rejecting restrictions on abortion care. Seventy-three percent of voters nationwide, including a majority of 2020 Trump voters, 3 in 4 independents, and 55% of white rural men believe things have gone too far. These findings come as 19 states have eliminated or restricted access because of abortion bans, and anti-choice extremists continue to push for a national ban.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“There is nothing moderate about banning abortion, and there are simply no so-called compromises to be made when it comes to our fundamental freedoms. This polling unequivocally reaffirms that. Voters across party, gender, and racial lines continue to tell politicians to stop interfering with decisions about abortion care. It’s time Republican politicians start listening.”

Key findings from the polling include:

  • By a more than 2-to-1 margin, Americans reject the idea that 15-week bans are a “reasonable compromise.” A mere 26% of voters think that 15-week bans are “reasonable.”
  • When reminded of some of the recent rollbacks on access to abortion, 73% of voters agree that things have gone too far, and that politicians should stop interfering with decisions about abortion care—including 62% who strongly agree. Even a majority (51%) of those who voted for Donald Trump in 2020 agree, as do more than 3 in 4 independents.
  • 70% of voters oppose one-size-fits-all abortion bans. This includes overwhelming majorities of Democratic and independent voters, and nearly half of Republicans—as well as over two-thirds of every racial or ethnic group.
  • 58% of voters strongly agree that these bans are dangerous.
  • Democratic and independent voters overwhelmingly prefer to leave these decisions up to patients and doctors.
