Reproductive Freedom For All Celebrates as Arizona’s 15-Week Abortion Ban Is Permanently Blocked Because of Ballot Measure
Washington, DC — Today, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge permanently blocked the state’s ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The case found the ban unconstitutional as it denied Arizonans access to abortion care in violation of the state’s 2024 constitutional amendment protecting the right to abortion. The Arizona Abortion Access Act (Proposition 139) was overwhelmingly approved by voters, enshrining the right to abortion into the state constitution. Reproductive Freedom for All was a founding member of the ballot measure committee.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Today’s ruling is a win for Arizonans and our democracy. It is proof of the power voters have when we organize and mobilize to protect our rights. Arizonans resoundingly voted to pass Prop 139 to enshrine reproductive freedom in the state constitution, and politicians have no place overruling the will of the people.”
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Arizona Campaigns Athena Salman released the following statement:
“Today’s news shows that Republican lawmakers can’t cheat their way into taking away our rights. This is a victory for the people of Arizona who overwhelmingly passed Prop 139 to protect access to abortion. We have seen firsthand the effects of the GOP’s extreme abortion bans, and are relieved that this case will permanently end this dangerous ban. Reproductive Freedom for All Arizona is proud to have mobilized our members to pass Proposition 139, and we’re grateful to see the will of the voters realized today.”
