Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns Republicans’ Block of Clean ACA Tax Credit Extension as Health Care Crisis Looms

Washington, DC — With just weeks before enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits are set to expire at the end of the year, 22 million Americans are bracing for skyrocketing health care costs. Today, instead of averting that disaster, Senate Republicans rejected Democrats’ proposal for a clean three-year extension of the current ACA tax credits, choosing political games over the basic responsibility to keep families insured.

The Senate also rejected Republicans’ so-called “plan” today, which would have further restricted coverage for abortion and gender-affirming care without extending ACA enhanced premium tax credits.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Republicans’ refusal to pass a clean extension of the ACA tax credits is not a policy disagreement—it is a manufactured crisis designed to hold Americans’ health care hostage while they posture and delay. Stabilizing health care costs for American families should not be controversial, and we’re grateful to Senate Democrats for making that clear and staying united around a real solution. Republicans’ refusal to act is a failure of basic governance. Once again, they have prolonged the health care crisis they created while using everyday Americans as bargaining chips to advance their unpopular anti-abortion agenda. The GOP’s cruelty and apathy know no bounds, and we will hold them accountable for abandoning the constituents they claim to represent while families across the country brace for crushing premiums.”

Ahead of the vote, Reproductive Freedom for All and Planned Parenthood Action Fund sent a letter to Congress making clear that both organizations will score any vote that adds additional abortion restrictions to the ACA tax credits, and that lawmakers will be held accountable for failing to pass a clean extension that protects Americans’ health care.
